Mario Draghi’s Fall Is a Triumph of Democracy, Not a Threat to It

There is an oddity about Mr. Draghi's role as a symbol of democracy.

No voter has ever voted for him anywhere. He was appointed in early 2021 to break a political impasse at the request of the Italian President Sergio Mattarella, who is not directly elected. Mr. Draghi may be honorable and capable, but his resignation is a triumph of democracy, at least as the term has traditionally been understood.
